Why Specification Matters With Bespoke Lighting
Specifying a MOSS fixture is not the same as selecting one from a catalogue. Every piece we produce is made to order in our Berlin workshop, which means the specification process is a conversation — not a transaction. For interior architects working on residential projects, this distinction is significant. It means you can influence dimensions, finish, suspension length, and configuration before production begins. It also means the process requires a different timeline than off-the-shelf alternatives.
This guide walks through the practical steps of specifying MOSS lighting for a project, from first contact to installation. Whether you are working on a penthouse in Munich, a private residence in Hamburg, or a boutique hotel in Berlin, the process follows the same logic.
Step 1: Initial Consultation
Every project starts with a conversation. You share floor plans, ceiling heights, material palettes, and — most importantly — the atmosphere you are trying to achieve. We listen before we suggest. Some architects come with a specific collection in mind; others describe a spatial problem and let us propose the right fixture. Both approaches work.
During consultation, we discuss mounting conditions, electrical provisions, and any structural constraints. If your project involves a sloped ceiling, an unusually high void, or a specific dimming system, this is the moment to mention it. The earlier we understand the technical context, the smoother the process.
Step 2: Choosing the Right Collection
MOSS currently offers three collections, each designed for different spatial situations. Dune works best in rooms where you want dramatic, directional light — dining tables, kitchen islands, long corridors. Emily is scaled for intimate settings: bedside pendants, reading nooks, powder rooms. Kosmos occupies the middle ground with a spherical form that distributes light evenly and works well as a centrepiece in living areas or entrance halls.
If you are unsure which collection suits your project, we can send physical samples. Photographs — however accurate — do not fully convey how a finish interacts with light in a real room. We strongly recommend requesting samples before finalising your specification.
Step 3: Selecting a Finish
We offer two finish families. The lacquered metallic range includes Dark Bronze, Copper, and Gold — surfaces with a consistent, refined sheen that pairs well with contemporary interiors. The Emily Oxid finish is a hand-oxidised patina applied by a specialist workshop in Germany. Each piece is unique, with subtle variations in tone and texture that develop further over time.
Finish selection is not purely aesthetic. Dark Bronze recedes into dark ceilings. Copper reflects warm tones into the room and amplifies candlelight. The patina finish suits projects where the client values the idea of an object that ages with the home. These are practical considerations for specification, not just visual preferences.
Step 4: Technical Coordination
Once the collection and finish are confirmed, we provide detailed technical drawings and specification sheets. These include exact dimensions, weight, recommended ceiling plate details, electrical requirements, and minimum clearances. We work directly with your electrician or project manager to ensure the installation goes smoothly.
All MOSS fixtures use high-CRI LED modules that are replaceable and dimmable. We specify compatible dimming systems and can advise on driver placement if ceiling voids are limited. For architects working with KNX or DALI systems, we provide the necessary integration details.
Step 5: Lead Times and Delivery
Standard lead time for a MOSS fixture is six to eight weeks from confirmed order. Custom configurations or unusual dimensions may require additional time. We recommend specifying MOSS early in the project timeline — ideally during the schematic design phase — so that electrical provisions can be coordinated with the build schedule.
Delivery includes professional packaging designed for the specific fixture. Installation instructions are included, and we are available by phone during the installation if questions arise. For larger projects, we can arrange on-site supervision.
Start the Conversation
If you are an interior architect or designer working on a project that requires considered lighting, we would like to hear from you. Send us your floor plans, a mood board, or simply a description of the space. We will respond with an initial recommendation within two working days.
