Pendant Light Canopy: Ceiling Fixing Guide | MOSS

A pendant light canopy is the smallest part of a luminaire and the part that most often causes trouble on site. It is the disc, plate or box at the ceiling that covers the electrical connection, carries the weight of everything below it and, in most contemporary fixtures, hides the driver. On a drawing it is a circle a few centimetres across. In a finished room it is the only piece of the fixture that touches the architecture, which is why it deserves more attention at specification stage than it usually gets.


This guide sets out what interior architects and specifiers need to fix early: how much space a canopy needs, when one ceiling point is not enough, where the control gear lives, and how the ceiling build-up changes the answer. The figures quoted are from the MOSS Objects collections, but the logic transfers to any suspended fixture.



What a pendant light canopy actually has to do


A canopy does four jobs at once, and they pull in different directions. It transfers the entire weight of the fixture into the building. It houses the mains termination, which has to stay accessible. It closes the opening in the ceiling cleanly enough to read as a finished detail. And in most contemporary LED fixtures it also contains the control gear.


The first two are the electrician's concern and the last two are yours, which is roughly why canopies get specified twice and coordinated once. A canopy that is mechanically correct but sits proud of a plaster line, or that lands forty millimetres from a sprinkler head, is still a defect.


There is also a material question. The canopy is not always the same material as the fixture it serves. Emily has a waxed oak frame and lacquered steel shades, but its canopy is steel, finished to sit quietly against the ceiling rather than to echo the timber. Dune is formed aluminium at the shades and steel at the canopy. Kosmos is hand-polished stainless steel with opal glass spheres, and there the canopy follows the frame. Where a client is sensitive to ceiling detail, this is worth confirming on the finish schedule rather than assuming the canopy inherits the shade finish.


Diameter and depth: the numbers that reach the drawing


Canopy dimensions are small numbers that do real work on a reflected ceiling plan. These are the current MOSS figures:


Emily III: 100 mm diameter (4") x 25 mm high (1")


Emily I and Emily II, and the horizontal groups from Group of Three to Group of Thirteen: 140 mm diameter (5.5") x 50 mm high (2")


Emily V6 to V12: 200 mm diameter (7.9") x 50 mm high (2")


Dune, every size and every configuration: 190 mm diameter (7.5") x 50 mm high (2")


Kosmos: 150 mm diameter (5.9") x 35 mm high (1.38")


Charlotte: a linear canopy, 1020 x 84 x 46 mm


Two things follow. First, depth is around 50 mm on almost everything, and all of it sits below the ceiling line. Nothing is recessed. That means no ceiling void is required, which is what makes these fixtures workable against an exposed concrete slab, a timber soffit or a historic plaster ceiling where cutting in is not an option.


Second, the canopy does not scale with the fixture. An Emily Group of Nine spans 278 cm and still lands on a single 140 mm disc. A Dune 12 Cluster and a Dune 4 Curve share the same 190 mm canopy. The visual weight of these pieces is entirely in the shades. At the ceiling they are deliberately small, and on the drawing they should be plotted as what they are, a point rather than a plate.


Standard drop is 300 cm (118") of cable across the collections, with 400 cm (157") on Emily V10 and V12. Cable can be shortened on site. Longer runs are made to order and should be confirmed with the order rather than solved with a loop above the canopy.



One canopy or two: when a fixture needs more than one ceiling point


Most fixtures hang from one point. Some do not, and the difference is set by engineering rather than styling.



Dune is a chain of shades, and the chain runs at safety extra-low voltage from a driver in the canopy. Up to twelve shades the chain is single and the fixture hangs from one canopy. At sixteen and twenty shades the chain is split in two, which means two drivers and two canopies of 190 mm each. Kosmos works on a related principle, with the larger constellations suspended from two ceiling points. Charlotte is the outlier, a single linear canopy just over a metre long.


For the specifier this is not a footnote. Two canopies means two coordinated positions, two pre-wired outlets at first fix and a fixed dimension between them. That dimension is set by the fixture, not by the site, and it cannot be stretched or compressed later by any useful amount. If a Dune 20 Curve is going over a long reception desk, both ceiling points need to be on the electrical drawing before the slab is cast or the ceiling is closed.


The same applies in reverse. If a client is still choosing between a Dune 12 and a Dune 16, the electrical layout is not fixed either, because one is a single point and the other is two. It is worth resolving size before first fix rather than after.


Where the driver sits, and what that means for the ceiling


The most consequential thing about a canopy is usually invisible: whether it contains the control gear.


On Dune the driver sits inside the canopy. There is no remote gear box, no service panel to negotiate with the ceiling contractor and no requirement for a void. The fixture arrives as one self-contained assembly, and the electrician provides a mains supply and a fixing point. This is the single most useful thing to tell a contractor early, because many will plan for a remote driver by default and lose time looking for somewhere to put it.


The consequence is that the dimming protocol has to be decided before manufacture. Dune drivers are supplied for Triac, DALI or 0-10 V, and the choice is fitted inside the canopy in Berlin. Changing it afterwards is not a site adjustment, it is a return.



Emily behaves differently. It uses standard E27 lamp holders at 220 V, or E26 at 120 V for North America, and carries no driver at all. The canopy holds only the mains connection. Dimming happens at the lamp and the circuit, which gives more freedom late in a project but puts the light quality decision in the hands of whoever buys the lamps. On hospitality projects that is worth specifying explicitly rather than leaving it to the FF&E schedule.


Kosmos runs integrated LED at 3000 K and Dune at 2700 K. Where both appear in one scheme the canopy is not the issue, but the colour temperature is, and the two should not be mixed in the same sightline without a decision behind it.



Ceiling build-ups, tolerances and the site conversation


A canopy is only as good as what it is fixed to, and this is where drawings and buildings diverge.


On a concrete slab the fixing is straightforward and the position is final. Set it out early and accept that it will not move. On plasterboard over a metal frame, a 190 mm disc does not spread load in any meaningful way, so a backing plate or noggin rated for the fixture weight has to go in before the board does. On timber joists the centres rarely land where the reflected ceiling plan wants them, and the honest conversation about that is best held during coordination rather than during installation.


Sloped and vaulted ceilings need a separate check. A canopy sits flush to the plane it is fixed to, while the cable hangs vertically. On a steep pitch the geometry reads differently from the elevation, and the effective drop at one end of a horizontal group is not the drop at the other.


Clearances matter more than the canopy diameter suggests. Sprinkler heads, smoke detectors, air diffusers and linear slots all carry their own coordination rules, and a canopy that clears them by thirty millimetres looks like a mistake even when it is compliant. Give it room on the plan.


Finally, think about the building after handover. Relamping an Emily means access to the shade rather than the canopy, but the canopy should still be reachable without dismantling a ceiling. In a double-height space that means a lift or a scaffold, and knowing which one is part of the specification, not an afterthought for the facilities team.


The canopy is the point where a decorative fixture stops being a product and becomes part of the building. Diameter, count, driver location and fixing substrate are four decisions that are cheap to make on a drawing and expensive to change on site. Fixing them early is the whole discipline.
