Linear Pendant Light: Three Approaches | MOSS

A linear pendant light is specified for a shape rather than for a room. Long dining tables, kitchen islands, reception counters, conference tables and bars all present the same geometry: a narrow rectangle of working surface that has to be lit evenly along its length, without a row of recessed downlights and without a single central fixture that leaves both ends in shadow.


MOSS Objects resolves that geometry in three ways. Charlotte is one continuous brass frame. The Emily groups suspend individually made shades from a shared canopy. Dune Curve and Dune Vertical Line build the run from modular aluminium segments. The three differ in construction, light distribution, ceiling interface and lead time, and the decision between them is usually settled by the ceiling above and the surface below, not by preference.



What a Linear Pendant Light Has to Solve


The first constraint is proportion. A luminaire suspended over a long table should read as related to that table, and the usual working range is between half and two thirds of the table length. Below half, the fixture looks incidental. Above two thirds, it crowds the ends and interferes with sightlines across the room. For a 240 cm table that gives a target run between 120 and 160 cm.


The second constraint is uniformity. A single round pendant over a 240 cm table produces a bright centre and two dim ends, and no amount of lumens corrects it, because the falloff is geometric: illuminance drops with the square of the distance from the source. A linear arrangement moves light sources out towards the ends, which is the only way to flatten that curve without adding recessed lighting.


The third is glare. People seated at a dining or conference table look horizontally, close to the height of the luminaire, and any light source visible at that angle causes discomfort. It is solved either by closing the shade, which is the Emily and Dune approach, or by lifting part of the output onto the ceiling, which is what Charlotte does with two of its four tubes.


The fourth is the ceiling. A linear run arrives at the ceiling through one canopy or several, and that decision belongs in the reflected ceiling plan long before the luminaire is ordered. One canopy means one junction box and one point of coordination with the slab. Several canopies mean several, each of which has to miss beams, ducts and sprinkler heads.


These four constraints are not weighted equally on every project. In hospitality the glare condition usually decides, because guests are seated for long periods and the luminaire sits in their field of view. In residential work proportion decides, because the object is seen from the whole room and not only from the table. In workplace and conference interiors the ceiling decides, since the reflected ceiling plan is fixed early and the services above it are dense. Establishing which of the four governs the project makes the choice between a continuous frame, a group of shades and a modular run largely self-evident.


Charlotte: One Continuous Brass Frame


Charlotte is a single object measuring 119 cm (47 inches) long, 41 cm (16 inches) high and 41 cm (16 inches) deep. The frame is solid brass, and it carries the current. There is no cable run inside the structure and nothing to conceal, so the luminaire reads as a drawn line when it is off and as four lines of light when it is on.


The light source is four LED quartz glass tubes of 6 mm diameter. Each tube draws 27 W and delivers 3,060 lumens at 3000 K with a colour rendering index of 98. Together they give 108 W and 12,240 lumens, dimmable, in either a 220 V or a 120 V build. Filament LEDs of this generation produce a continuous line without visible pixelation, which is what makes the tube legible as a line rather than as a row of points.


Distribution is split. The two upper tubes throw light onto the ceiling and the two lower ones cover the table surface. The result is a high total output that does not arrive as one glaring plane, and it is the reason Charlotte suits rooms where the ceiling is worth lighting.


The ceiling interface is a single plate of 1020 by 84 mm with a height of 46 mm. Cable length is 300 cm (118 inches). Materials are solid brass and quartz glass, nothing else. Brass was chosen for structural stability and for the way it accumulates patina, so the surface moves over the life of the object rather than staying fixed. The proportions reference what survives of Berlin architecture of the 1920s: slender lines, structural clarity, ornament reduced to form. Compliance is CE, with UL on request, and lead time is 12 to 16 weeks.


Emily Groups: A Line Built from Repeated Shades


The Emily groups take the opposite approach. Instead of one continuous element, the line is assembled from individually made shades hung from a shared canopy. Group of Three, Five, Seven, Nine and Thirteen are the standard counts, and the length of the run follows the count.


Emily Group of Five is representative. Electrically it is five E27 lamp holders at 220 V taking up to 20 W in LED or CFL, or five E26 holders at 120 V for the United States and Canada. All five drop from a single canopy of 140 mm diameter and 50 mm height, so a five-shade run still needs only one junction box. Cable length is 300 cm, with drops set at 142 cm and 110 cm, which staggers the shades in height.


That stagger is the point. Five identical shades hung at one height read as a bar. The same five at two heights read as a rhythm, and the eye follows the run along the table rather than stopping at the middle. It also lowers the apparent mass of the installation under a normal ceiling.


Construction is 1 mm sheet steel, wet painted, with a Plexiglas diffuser, textile covered cable and a waxed oak frame. The shades are closed, so the light is directional and falls on the surface below. Every part is hand-brushed and hand-painted in Germany. Standard finishes are anthracite semi-matte, white semi-matte, black high gloss, gold semi-matte, copper semi-matte and dark bronze semi-matte, and custom colours are available on request. Compliance is CE, with UL on request, and lead time is 8 to 12 weeks.



Dune Curve and Vertical Line: A Modular Run


Dune builds the line from modules. A Dune Curve is a continuous run of formed aluminium shades, available from four to twenty segments, and the geometry follows a curve rather than a straight axis, so the run stays legible from more than one direction in the room.


Dune 12 Curve carries 22 LEDs of 2.1 W and 260 lumens each at 2700 K, running on 110 to 240 V, for a total of 5,720 lumens at 46.2 W. Dune 6 Vertical Line, the compact vertical variant, carries 10 LEDs for 2,600 lumens at 21 W. Output scales with the segment count, which makes the family straightforward to size against a surface: pick the length, and the output follows.


Materials are aluminium shades, PC diffusers and a steel canopy of 190 mm diameter and 50 mm height. Cable length is 300 cm. The detail that matters at specification stage is the canopy count. Runs of four to twelve shades arrive at the ceiling through one canopy. Runs of sixteen and twenty use two, one at each end of the run, which means two ceiling positions to coordinate and two junction boxes rather than one.


Anodised and lacquered finishes are both available, and the two behave differently on aluminium: anodising sits in the metal and keeps a directional grain, lacquer sits on it and closes the surface. Compliance is CE, with UL on request, and lead time is 8 to 12 weeks.


The curve itself has a practical consequence. A straight run has one correct viewing axis, along its length, and reads as a bar from anywhere else. A curved run presents a changing silhouette as the viewer moves through the room, which is useful in open-plan interiors where the table is approached from several directions rather than entered head-on.



Specifying a Linear Run: Dimensions, Output and Lead Time


The three families divide cleanly. Charlotte is a fixed object: 119 cm, 12,240 lumens, one 1020 mm canopy plate, 12 to 16 weeks. It is the choice when the span is close to 119 cm, when a high dimmable output is wanted, and when the ceiling should be lit as well as the table.


Emily groups and Dune runs are variable. Length and output both follow the segment count, and both ship in 8 to 12 weeks. Emily suits a run that should read as a series of discrete, hand-finished pieces. Dune suits a run that should read as one continuous line.


Voltage and lamp base are worth settling early. Emily is E27 at 220 V for Europe and Asia, or E26 at 120 V for the United States and Canada. Dune runs on 110 to 240 V without a change of part. Charlotte is built for 220 V or 120 V. All three are CE marked, with UL available on request, which matters for North American projects and is best raised at enquiry stage rather than at order stage.


Two documents make the rest of the process short. The reflected ceiling plan shows where a canopy can land and what it has to miss. The table or counter dimensions set the run length. With both in hand, the configuration, the canopy count and the drop lengths can be confirmed in a single exchange, and custom colours and finishes quoted at the same time.
